Ciro’s Saturday All-Italy Tasting Wines
Casa Canevel Prosecco Rosé DOC, Treviso, Italy, NV
Varietals: Glera, 85%, Pinot Noir, 15 %, Alc. 11%
In the Venetian dialect, “canevel” means “small cellar.” Founded in 1979, the family-owned, estate winery of Casa Canevel is based in Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene. This winery produces refined sparkling wines from the local Glera grape. The rosé pours a light, golden pink and is fizzy in the glass. Aromas of strawberries, grapefruit, and apples are followed by an elegant acidity and fruit nuances on the palate.
Perfect as an aperitif, the wine also pairs well with hors d’oeuvres, fish, and poultry. $17.99
Marani Bianco Veronese IGT, Veneto, Italy, 2019
Varietal: Garganega, Alc. 13.5%
In the Soave region of the Veneto east of Verona, the Garganega grapes that produce this wine grow in limestone soil. The grapes are hand-picked and transported as quickly as possible to the pressing house. The juice is fermented in oak barrels and aged on the lees. The wine is a vibrant yellow in the glass. Aromas of rich, ripe apple and gooseberry, honey, and caramel are followed by a voluptuous creaminess on the palate, with a persistent mineral finish.
Pairs well: with pastas in cream sauce, white meats, and grilled seafood. $17.99
Iniceri Abisso Cataratto, Sicily, Italy, 2018
Varietal: Cataratto Bianco, Alc. 12.5%
Inicieri is a family-owned vineyard in Contrada Inici, outside the town of Castellammare del Golfo, so named for the castle nearby perched on a gulf overlooking the Mediterranean. The family uses organic farming practices to grow native Sicilian grapes such as Cataratto, one of the classic traditional white grape varieties of the island. It produces a wine that is pale yellow with green hues. The nose is a lovely balance between fruity notes of green apple and citrus and the spiciness of ginger and white pepper. High minerality is balanced by good structure and a very long finish on the palate.
Pairs well: with seasonal greens, such as arugula, with fresh grilled nectarines, crushed almonds, and sardines sprinkled with sea salt and olive oil. $19.99
Iniceri Nero d'Avola Eremita, Sicily, Italy 2017
Varietal: Nero d’Avolo, Alc. 13%
The Bambina family has been growing, cultivating, and producing certified organic native Sicilian varietals like Nero d’Avola for five generations. Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s most planted red grape and has been planted in Sicily since the 1600s. In Eremita, the small dark grape produces a deep ruby wine with aromas of cherry, blueberry and black currant and spicy notes like rosemary and vanilla balanced by a touch of vanilla and tobacco imparted by 8 months in French oak. The wine is elegant on the palate with fine tannins, a lot of minerality, and a long finish.
Pairs well: with grilled beef, roasted lamb, roasted game, and pasta with a hearty sauce. $18.99
Kaltern Schiava Gentile DOC, Trentino, Italy, 2021
Varietal: Schiava, Alc. 12.5%
Schiava has a long history in Alto Adige. Until a few decades ago, 80 per cent of the area in South Tyrol was cultivated with Schiava. While that percentage has dropped, Schiava is still the most widely planted variety in the region. This Kaltern schiava is light cherry red in color with an aromatic, fruity nose dominated by cherry and raspberry notes with hints of bitter almond.
Medium-bodied and very soft on the palate, it is a pure pleasure to drink.
Pairs well: with appetizers or typical Tyrolean fare such as pickled pork belly and sausage, but also to lighter meats and mild cheeses. …$18.99
Fattoria di Rodáno Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy 2017
Varietals: Sangiovese 90%, Canaiolo and Colorino 10%, Alc. 14%
Fattoria di Rodáno is a top source for classically made, user-friendly, and complex Chianti. Located in Castellina in the heart of the Chianti Classico district, the family-owned estate dates back as a wine-producing property to the sixteenth century. Rodáno has belonged to the Pozzesi family since that time. The Chianti Classico is a juicy red wine with aromas of black fruit, notes of violets and wild herbs, and hints of wet earth and tobacco. On the palate it’s very fruity, delicate, and elegant. It’s an easy to drink wine, fresh and with a long, pleasant finish.
Pairs well: with pasta with tomato sauce, lasagna, grilled meat, or a burger. $23.99
