Talya Baharal: What’s In A Voice Artist Talk
Solo Exhibition: August 7-17 at Cove Gallery, 37 Rocky Neck Ave., Gloucester
Artist Lecture: August 10; 5-6pm at Rocky Neck Cultural Center, 6 Wonson St., Gloucester

As the 2025 Goetemann Artist Residency Distinguished Artist/Teacher (GAR) (DA/T), Baharal
will offer a free public Art Talk at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center in Gloucester (6 Wonson Street),
introducing her work and process to the community. This special event—typically held at the Cape
Ann Museum, which is currently under construction—continues a long-standing collaboration
between Rocky Neck Art Colony and the Museum.

Talya Baharal’s abstract paintings trace a journey of transformation—shaped by observation,
memory, and the tactile process of making. Drawing inspiration from overlooked fragments of
everyday life—cracked asphalt, broken ice sheets, mended garments, mangled wires—Baharal
reimagines these unintended compositions in the language of abstraction. "Excavating and
disturbing surfaces—both metaphorically and physically—has been a constant in my work,” she
says. “I paint for the moments of clarity, for the courage to destroy and rebuild, for the need to feel
alive.”

Formerly a sculptor and art jeweler, Baharal brings her deep understanding of form and texture into
her paintings. Her compositions layer acrylic paint, ink, and collage—often incorporating torn pieces
of previous works. A visual dialogue emerges between bold brushwork, intricate linework, and
layered materials, revealing a dynamic armature beneath the surface.

Born in Tel Aviv and raised in both Israel and London, Baharal moved to New York City in 1979. She
built a widely recognized career as a studio jeweler and sculptor before turning her focus exclusively
to painting. Her recent solo exhibitions include Raw Ink – Blue Paint at Five Points Art Center (CT),
Shape of a Language at First Street Gallery (NYC), and shows in Rockland, ME and Healdsburg,
CA. Baharal studied painting with Steve Aimone, Fran O’Neill, and John Lees. She is a NYFA Fellow
and has served as juror and curator in contemporary sculpture and art jewelry.
