Sawyer Free Library Receives $25,000 In Digital Equipment from Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech's Connected and Online Program

Gloucester, MA — May 13, 2026 — The Sawyer Free Library is pleased to announce that it has received $25,000 worth of digital equipment through a Connected and Online Grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MassTech)’s Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI). The grant provides 34 new computer devices
and a printer, significantly expanding digital access for the Gloucester community.

The Sawyer Free Library is one of 200 organizations participating in MBI’s Connected and Online Program. This initiative, funded by the U.S. Treasury’s Capital Projects Fund, invests $28.5 million through the distribution of over 32,000 internet-enabled devices, along with assistive technology and supportive equipment, to eligible organizations
across Massachusetts. The goal of the program is to increase access to education, expand workforce training and support access to health care services by establishing public device lending programs and on-site device stations.

At Sawyer Free Library, the new computer devices will:
? Expand the Digital Devices to Go lending program with 14 Dell Chromebooks and 6 Dell Latitude Tablets, enabling more cardholders to borrow free Chromebooks both onsite and to take home.
? Add a class set of 14 Dell Pro Laptops to the Digital Learning Lab, providing new opportunities for digital learning programs and practice Open Lab sessions focused on the Microsoft Office Suite. The addition of the JAWS New England Low Vision subscription on 3 of the laptops ensures accessibility for all students.
? Add a HP Color LaserJet Multifunction Printer in the digital Learning Lab to enhance digital participation, accessibility and service delivery.

Digital learning programs at the Sawyer Free Library consist of hands-on, skill-building training in fundamental digital skills, including basic computer operations, productivity software, online safety, and communication tools such as email and video conferencing. Staff also assist people with using the Library’s online apps and digital resources,
including downloading and reading eBooks and eAudiobooks, and using online
newspapers and magazines.

“With these new devices, Gloucester moves forward on closing the digital divide with more technology, more access and more opportunities for everyone in our community,” said Library Director and Gloucester Digital Equity Steering Committee Chair Jenny Benedict. “We are delighted to be recognized as Gloucester’s digital support hub for the
entire community and thankful to our federal delegation, state elected officials, and state partners at MassTech and MBI for their ongoing support.”

By expanding access to devices and hands-on instruction, Sawyer Free Library helps participants to build digital confidence, reduce social isolation and access essential online services that enhance independence, opportunity and quality of life. The Library’s Digital Learning services support people to participate in online educational programs,
search for employment and conduct job interviews, and connect with providers for telehealth appointments and Medicare enrollment.

The Sawyer Free Library is a leader in advancing digital equity in Gloucester through partnerships, programs, and initiatives that foster a sense of belonging, community building, and continuous learning. Now operating in its recently renovated and expanded location at 2 Dale Ave., the Library serves as a key community resource in delivering free internet service, device access, and digital learning to the entire community.
