About Gordon Curtis

Gordon Curtis is a sculptor whose work emerges from a deep relationship with the natural world—specifically, the wild, weather-worn driftwood found along the New England coastline. With a background spanning over three decades as an executive coach, speaker, and author, Gordon turned toward sculpture not as a departure from his past, but as a return to something essential.

He spends countless hours scouring the coastline from Cape Ann to Connecticut, searching for pieces of driftwood that captivate his eye—twisted, worn, rotten, half-buried forms shaped by wind, tide, sun and time. From there, he enters a patient and intuitive process using hand tools—rasps, chisels, carving knives and deer antler—to uncover the heartwood hidden within. The result is a conversation: between artist and tree, chaos and form, stillness and motion.

Gordon’s work reflects the raw beauty of nature without manipulating it into submission. Each piece retains the marks of its journey—cracks, textures, wormholes, salt-softened edges—while also revealing unexpected balance and movement. There’s a quiet integrity to the way he shapes without overpowering, allowing the wood’s character and story to be revealed and celebrated.

“I don’t try to impose anything,” Gordon says. “The wood already knows what it is. My job is to meet it, follow it, and shape just enough to let that be accentuated.”
