About Us
Building Center has spent more than 120 years proving that an independent lumberyard can do far more than supply building materials—it has become a trusted partner, an employer of choice, and a cornerstone of its community.
Our story began in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1903, when Cap Heberle risked his life to help extinguish a burning barge in Gloucester Harbor. Awarded $4,000 for his bravery by the owner, John Rockefeller, he used the money to purchase the Gloucester Coal and Lumber Company—the business that would become Building Center. More than a century later, generations of contractors, builders, and homeowners continue to rely on us not simply because of what we sell, but because of the people behind the counter, in the yard, and on the trucks. We’ve learned that relationships are the strongest foundation any company can build. That philosophy continues to shape who we are today.
As our industry has evolved, Building Center has embraced change without abandoning the values that built our reputation. We have transformed from a traditional lumber dealer into a full-service construction partner, combining knowledgeable people with modern technology, engineering support, installation services, logistics, and sponsoring CSL trainings that help customers complete projects more efficiently. Every investment we make is guided by one question: Will this make our customers more successful?
