WHAT & WHY …For this spotlight on Portuguese wines we move aside the great sweet wines of Portugal…Ports, Madeiras, Mascatel de Setubal and Carcavelos, focusing to the storied Alentejo region and wine from the celebrated Esporao Wine Co. and the varietals growing on the Herdade do Grous estate, the organic red and white wines of Esporao Reservas and the distinctly crafted blends of Monte Velho reds and white, value priced wines $14.99 -$19.99. a unique taste-educational session…seductive aromas, indigenous grapes, a wine experience that will be new and revealing to you palate.  As always, the tasting is elevated using our imported Riedel stemware.                   

WHO: Guest host Kelly Ruby, Portuguese Wine Specialists of Aidil Wines and Savour’s Kathleen Morgan have selected fine price-value wines, new aromas and flavor to experience. Truly a tasteful, value-laden event.

Monte Velho Branco (white), Herdade do Esporao, Alentejano, Portugal 2019, Alc. 13.5%
Varietals: Antao 40%, Roupeiro 40%, Perrum 20%, Tasting: The 2019 Esporao Monte Velho White opens with a pleasing aroma of citrus, pear, crisp apple s and tropical fruit aromas along with a bit of a floral note. The wine features similar flavors when tasting, wrapped up in a smooth, round, tangy mouthfeel. With good acidity, good depth and good balance this is pleasing, lively blend. Pairs Well: pasta primavera, pork loin, shellfish and lean fish
( cod, haddock)  …$14.99

Esporao White Reserva organic, Herdade do Esporao, DOC Alentejano, Alentejo, Portugal 2019, Alc. 14% Varietals: Antao Vaz, Arinto, Roupeiro Tasting: Crystal clear, light straw color with green hues. On the nose waxy lemon, oak, butter, bread dough, green apple, sea breeze, vanilla bean, chalky minerals, floral notes (peach/lemon blossom) appear as the wine breathes. Palate is much weightier than the nose, although quite fresh on the nose. Oak, butter and bread dough mingle with spiced citrus fruits (lemon and mandarin) with a lot of spice present. Medium acid and full body. Intense finish Pairs Well: pasta with clams, grilled pork chops, shellfish and lean fish
( cod, haddock) Rating: Wine Enthusiast 90pts… $19.99

Esporao Red Reserva Tinto organic, Herdade do Esporao, DOC Alentejano, Alentejo, Portugal, 2018, Alc. 14.5% Varietals: Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Syrah, Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Franca, Tasting: Intense ruby color. Aroma offers notes of black fruit jam with spices( black pepper , cloves) combined with notes of coffee berries. On the palate Black fruits and spice from wood aging are given a boost by layers of tannin and acidity that support the generosity.  Persistent finish! Pairs Well: Top sirloin steak, lamb roast, veal, poultry, Rating:  Wine Enthusiast 91pts… $19.99

Tasting: Made for drinking young, this wine is soft and richly fruity. Blackberry fruits are well assimilated with the light tannin core, allowing richness to balance with juicy fruitiness. Intense and rich, with a solid structure and long finish. Pairs Well: beef dishes, lamb chops, veal and roasted poultry… $14.99
