Description
Franz Schubert (1797—1828) | String Quartet No. 12 in C minor, D 703, “Quartettsatz”
Béla Bartók (1881—1945) | String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor
Kenji Bunch (b. 1973) | World Premiere String Quartet
Sheffield Chamber Players brings an intimate program of works for string quartet to Windhover on Friday, June 9. The program—titled “…a small, makeshift place,” after Béla Bartók’s description of the cabin in the Adirondacks where he lived and wrote music during the last summer of his life—examines each of our deep-seated need to find our voice.
Sasha Callahan and Megumi Stohs Lewis, violin
Alexander Vavilov, viola
Leo Eguchi, cello
Bartók’s String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor appears on the program with two other string quartets: Franz Schubert‘s “Quartettsatz,” a single movement from an unfinished quartet; and a newly-commissioned work by acclaimed American composer Kenji Bunch.
Bunch is the second of five composers whom Sheffield tapped in 2021 to create new works by a diverse array of composers for its own repertoire and for the broader field of chamber music.
In addition to this performance at Windhover, “..a small, makeshift place” will be performed in private homes and public locations throughout May and June 2023, closing out Sheffield’s 2022-23 Season.
