SEPTEMBER’S FIRST SATURDAY COMPLIMENTARY FINE WINE TASTINGS @ SAVOUR WITH MASCIARELLI WINE COMPANY
WHAT: Join us this Saturday, September 11 for a complimentary, transitional tasting bridging summer to fall, with wine sage Kurt Gunkel. Kurt is pouring wines from Masciarelli Wine Co.
International Portfolio representing: Bordeaux’s east bank, Spain, Italy, Africa & So. Africa …tasters will experience 5 distinctive wines, bottles that may be new to your palette. As always, the tasting is elevated using our imported Riedel stemware.
WHY: The occasion to experience wines with wide-ranging qualities… grape varietals that defined these select wine regions. For this tasting it’s wine that aptly supports robust meats and fowl, rich sauces and cheeses of these storied regions.
WHO: Guest host Kurt Gunkel, international wine specialist and Savour’s Kathleen Morgan have selected a truly eclectic line up of racy, memorable wines.
WHEN: This Saturday, September 11, from 2p to 4p at Savour
HOW: Saturday tastings are complimentary, as is parking behind the store with rear entrance.
Saturday’s Pourings include:
Gini Vermentino, Tuscany, Italy. A golden color of flax, featuring flavors of orange blossoms, boxwood, and elderberry, with a crisp, dry finish of toasted almonds. Pairs Well: with salads, vegetables and soft cheeses like the Italian classic, Robiola
Groote Post “Sea Salter”, Darling, South Africa. Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blend, Displaying typical Darling coastal minerality and saline notes with soft nuances of citrus, apricot stone fruit and green apple. 50% aged in French oak, with the remainder aged on the lees for a luscious mouthfeel. Great acidity ensuring the wine can age for several years. Pairs Well: with green vegetables, asparagus, goat cheese, curry, roast poultry, and pasta with cream sauces.
Doolhof “Dark Lady of the Labyrinth” 100% Pinotage, Wellington South Africa. The name refers to the myth of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete, and Theseus. This unique wine blends black cherry fruit, clove and nutmeg, with undertones of earthy dark chocolate and coffee. Like Pinot Noir, it’s wonderful with many different foods, but sings with “Midnight Moon” cheese. Pairs Well: with dark meat poultry, such as Duck with a boysenberry sauce.
Ondarre Rioja Reserva 2015, La Rioja, Spain. 100% Tempranillo. Aromas of cherry, berry, tomato sauce and vanilla are smoky and savory. A flush, full mouthfeel is lifted by core acidity, while flavors of blackened spice, tobacco, toast and cassis finish with classic Rioja notes of vanilla, mocha, toast and warmth. This wine already has some age on it (2015) aged both in bottle and oak for years before release. It is a great find and has earned 92 points from the Wine Enthusiast as well as the International Wine award in 2019. Like most Tempranillos a remarkably friendly food wine. Pairs Well: with paella, Chiopino, Manchego Cheese and roasted lamb !
Chateau Pindefleurs, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, 2018. Predominantly Merlot (90%) and Cabernet Franc. Powerful yet delicate, deep yet refined, Ch. Pindefleurs can be enjoyed young, for the wine’s fresh, bright fruit, or cellared for a few years to reveal the length and elegance characteristic of Saint-Émilion wine. Aged in new French oak for 12 months, the wine is both powerful and soft. characteristic structure of the great Bordeaux wines.
Deep plum and cassis flavors with notes of blueberry dominate the palette, while the chalk and wet granite confirm a grand wine of Bordeaux. Pairs Well: with roasted red meat…prime rib and roast leg of lamb. Tuck this away for the Christmas holiday!
Adding to the Masciarelli Tasting is Savour’s Everyday Tech Tastings at the North Shore’s Only - Digital Wine Machine.Taste 20 new wines seasonally selected and yes, complimentary. All wines are paired with food recommendations from Kathleen….The wine machine is a breeze to use…and fun!
