The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Senator Edward Markey will be the keynote speaker at the Chamber's October Membership Power Luncheon. The event will be held on Friday, October 18 at The Gloucester House, 63 Rogers Street, Gloucester, with check-in and lunch beginning at 11:30 am and the program commencing at noon. Senator Markey will be speaking on the Massachusetts economy, the effects of sequestration and the recent government shutdown.
Senator Edward Markey is a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and entrepreneurship. He is also a member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee and the Committee on Foreign Relations. Edward Markey was born, raised, and lives in Malden, Massachusetts. He attended Boston College (B.A., 1968) and Boston College Law School (J.D., 1972). He was elected to the Massachusetts State House in 1972, where he served two terms representing Malden and Melrose. Markey was elected in 1976 to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served 18 terms, rising to become the Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, Ranking Democratic Member of the Natural Resources Committee, and the second ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
During his career in the House, Markey authored numerous pieces of significant legislation in a bipartisan manner. He has become a national leader on energy and environmental issues, working successfully to pass comprehensive climate legislation in the House, increase fuel economy standards and hold BP accountable after the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. Senator Markey has strengthened homeland security in the areas of nuclear, air and maritime cargo, liquefied natural gas and chemical security. He is regarded as an expert in telecommunications and technology policy and has worked to ensure openness and competition, including breaking down monopolies in the cable television and telephone markets.
