Free Outdoor HarborWalk Summer Cinema Series: Back to the Future
Date and Time
Wednesday Jul 23, 2014
8:00 PM - 8:00 PM EDT
Location
Downtown Gloucester 65 Rogers Street, Gloucester, MA 01930
Description
Grab the Popcorn! The City of Gloucester and the Cape Ann Community Cinema are pleased to announce a swell summertime partnership: The HarborWalk Summer Cinema Series. These FREE outdoor movies will run Wednesdays for eight weeks throughout the summer, July 9 to August 27 at 65 Rogers Street (I4C2)—adjacent to the Building Center.
Movies start at 8 PM (or when it gets dark, whichever is earlier), and feature blockbuster classics suitable for the whole family. Imagine seeing “Jaws” with Gloucester Harbor as a back drop, or “ET, the Extraterrestrial” in the moody dark of night!
Community Development Director Tom Daniel said the initiative grew out of the 2013 Downtown Work Plan in which people said they valued an active and authentic downtown. “Downtown Gloucester is a great place and we want to ensure it continues to thrive. Putting under-utilized spaces to productive use gives another way for people to enjoy time with family and friends downtown and a chance to visit a shop or restaurant. We also want to make sure everyone knows about the HarborWalk and the amazing Gloucester stories it celebrates.”
The movies are free, and all are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, a blanket, or perhaps a picnic. Local vendors will provide snacks for purchase. Better yet, support our local restaurants by having dinner then walking down to enjoy the show.
Cape Ann Community Cinema founder Rob Newton said the series is a great example of public-private partnership: “Downtown businesses will benefit, and the films we’ve chosen are classics that everyone will enjoy.” Rob noted that all the films are HD quality and will be shown on a 25-foot screen. In addition to the Cape Ann Community Cinema, the series is supported by the Gloucester Daily Times, Doyon’s, Trident Gallery, the Building Center, Common Crow, Cape Ann Massage Therapy, Pop Gallery, the Gloucester Stage Company, and Cape Ann TV.
While downtown, take the opportunity to visit the HarborWalk. The HarborWalk features 42 “story moments” on Cape Ann granite markers that weave in and around the waterfront and though Gloucester’s historic downtown. As noted by Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk: “Our goal was to link Gloucester’s waterfront with the downtown area, and to make it easy for residents and visitors to experience the working waterfront's edge without interfering with it.”
North Shore104.9 will provide pre-show entertainment beginning at 6 PM. In the case of inclement weather, the rain date for each movie will be the following Monday night.
