Description

Trident Gallery is very pleased to present Coming Round, an exhibition of thirty exquisite mixed media paintings and collage by Diane Ayott and Suzanne Ulrich. This exhibition aims to reveal the diversity of form, color, movement, and mood which emerges from the unity of the artists’ longstanding and closely disciplined practices of making art. Coming Round celebrates the awakening of spring within the cycle of seasons—the fertility of simple seeds, a series of songs in voices strong, calm, and loud, and the dawning of insights, which can arrive as a dream or a bullet. Coming Round will be on view May 6 – June 4, 2017. Gallery hours are Friday and Saturday 10–7; Sunday and Monday 10–5; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 12–5. The gallery will host an Opening Reception for the artists on Saturday, May 6, 5–7pm. The following weekend, on Saturday, May 13, at 2pm, the gallery will host a Conversation with Diane Ayott about her artistic process and recent work. Ayott’s abstractions are luxuriously physical objects resulting from the accrual of layer after layer of paint, color, and pattern, launched by imaginative titles into the realm of language, play, and political engagement. In the opulent surfaces of Ayott’s paintings, the eye experiences depth and continual movement, both spatial and aesthetic, as the mind integrates, deconstructs, and re-integrates the parts into wholes, weaving in new experiences and feelings over time as the viewer lives with her art. Ulrich’s small collages invoke the idea of pure design, yet they are also delicate artifacts which treasure and transform pieces of paper at a scale that implicates viewers’ deep associations with this material so ubiquitous and important to daily life. Diane Ayott resides and maintains a studio in Salem MA and is a Professor of Art at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly MA. She is represented by Trident Gallery in Gloucester MA and by Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York City and Bridgehampton NY. Suzanne Ulrich resides in Marblehead MA and maintains a studio in Beverly MA. Her collages have been exhibited at galleries and museums in New England and nationwide. She is represented by Barbara Krakow Gallery and art consultants Andrea Marquit and Jacqueline Becker in Boston. The work of both artists has been exhibited at galleries and museums in New England and nationwide, and is collected by prestigious private, corporate, institutional, and government collectors. Trident Gallery shows beautiful and intelligent contemporary art in all mediums, emphasizing the work of artists continuing Gloucester’s rich legacy as a center for new American Art. Gallery Director Dr. Matthew Swift curates and produces the exhibitions, drawing on over twenty years of multi-disciplinary scholarship, teaching, and creative exploration. The Trident Live Art Series presents performances by seasoned professionals showing experimental and collaborative work in the intimate salon setting of the gallery. Live Art Series Director Sarah Slifer Swift curates and produces the performances, drawing on over twenty years of experience in the United States and abroad as a dance artist, choreographer, and producer.
