The Folly Cove Designers’ name is intimately linked with the Cape Ann Museum. Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios, the Designers’ founder and mentor, led the renowned group from 1939 until her death in 1968. Burton’s beloved books, including Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel and Caldecott-winner The Little House, continue to delight generations of parents, children, and librarians.
A new memoir, Folly Cove Sketches/Remembering Virginia Lee Burton, written by Burton’s great-niece, June Vail, offers warm, honest glimpses into her aunt’s everyday life and wide-ranging artistic practices. Vail vividly chronicles living as a teenager with Aunt Jinnee and Uncle George at Folly Cove, evoking the area’s natural beauty and community spirit in the 1960’s. An open Q and A will follow Vail’s informal, illustrated talk. Books will be available for sale and signing following the presentation.
June Vail founded the dance program at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and served as chair of Bowdoin’s department of theater and dance over a long teaching career. In addition to Folly Cove Sketches (2022) she has published two previous books, Cultural Choreographies (1997) and The Passion of Perfection/ Gertrude Hitz Burton’s Modern Victorian Life (2017).
