SUMMARY:Passing through Gloucester: John Sloan between City and Country
DESCRIPTION:In contrast to the urban setting of John Sloan's most memorable Ashcan School pictures\, the works the artist produced in Gloucester have generally been taken as pastoral in nature\, at a remove from contemporary concerns and current events. Yet Sloan's time in Gloucester overlapped not only with the period of his deepest political involvements\, but also with the looming disruptions of World War I. This talk will consider the resonances between Sloan's New York images and his Gloucester scenes\, taking note of the political concerns that may indeed have colored his treatment of the supposedly idyllic countryside. Individual tickets: Members $10 / nonmembers $15. Series tickets: Members $25 / nonmembers $40. To purchase tickets or for more information please call (978)283-0455 x10 or email info@capeannmuseum.org. Tickets can also be ordered online at Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/passing-through-gloucester-john-sloan-between-city-and-country-tickets-17084674722.
