SUMMARY:North Atlantic Ballet Theatre: Summer/SCAPE 2023
DESCRIPTION:Escape the ordinary with outdoor performances featuring new works and fan favorites \n\n1:2 Choreography Lab explores the inter-connectivity of thought through music and movement. Since 2015 NAB has commissioned and supported local artists to create new works in an open environment. This opportunity for experimentation fosters new growth for the art form and provides unique experiences for the community. The 1:2 Choreography Lab has served as an incubator for many favorite works in the NAB repertoire\, like Mus-Krat by Lucy-Warren-Whitman\, which began in the 2021 Summer Lab\, and became a four movement piece that Fall. It has also given space for budding choreographers like Ilya Vidrin\, one of Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch" in 2022.\n\nWhile in past years the 1:2 Choreography Lab featured two choreographer's interpretations of the same piece of music\, we decided to expand the concept this summer by opening the choreographers to visualize different music by the same composer.\n\nWait/Weight\nis a contemporary ballet suite choreographed by Ilya Vidrin. The quintet work explores different valences of anticipation and longing the robust and complex feelings of waiting for someone or something while not wanting to miss what is already happening. Set to music by Julie Kent\, Andrew Bird\, and Antonio Vivaldi. This is the second work Vidrin has created for North Atlantic Ballet.\n\nWorld Premiere\nChoreographed by Lucy Warren-Whitman. Set to music by Julie Kent. More information coming soon \n\nDogtown Phantoms\n\nA ghostly tale unravels amongst the background of Dogtown Commons\, the haunted woods that separate Rockport from Gloucester. In its last days\, before it was abandoned\, Dogtown played host to suspected witches\, vandals\, and prostitutes. It's at this intersection of unruly characters\, that a story is weaved from the folk tales and Cape Ann's forgotten history. NAB is proud to revive Dogtown Phantoms\, a ballet co-created in the 80s by NAB's original founders. The story line was developed and researched by Rachel Whitman and choreographed by Skip Warren\, on the land in which the story is set.
