DESCRIPTION:Fair Winds and Following Seas presents the work of two artists from opposite coasts: interdisciplinary Southern California artist Matthew Allen and Boston-area ceramicist Zelda Rohrbach Mayer.\n\nZelda and Matthew's practices are deeply shaped by the materials they work with. Both appreciate works in process as much as the finished piece\, as well as the inevitable element of surprise that comes with making objects by hand.\n\nCommunity is also central to both artists' creative lives. An avid surfer and former Surfer Magazine Art Director\, Matthew draws inspiration from the surfing community\, including its rich visual culture. With dual degrees in anthropology and fine art\, Zelda's practice explores the intimate relationship between ceramics and social behavior. She activates her functional work through community dinners\, workshops and pop-up events centered on gathering and ritual.\n\nThe exhibition takes its title from a traditional maritime blessing. "Fair winds and following seas" has long been offered at moments of transition naval farewells\, retirements\, changes of command\, ship commissionings\, memorials\, and departures.\n\nThe expression suggests well wishes for conditions that will aid your forward progress wind and sea moving in harmony with one's desired course. For two highly experimental\, material-driven artists\, this concept echoes their creative practices. Letting go of control\, embracing the unexpected\, and trusting the process reflect a shared approach in which medium and material become both collaborator and teacher.
